How sharing your career experience can help young people find their future.

At Codam, we believe that technology alone cannot bring 21st-century skills for our students. Technology is an accelerator but does not enable change on its own. We believe in the power of sharing knowledge and the impact those stories can have when passionate and visionary people share them.

The CodamX talk series is a dedicated platform to create an open discussion between our students and industry professionals who are using technology daily. Experts from all over the world are helping Codam's students to find their passion and lead future innovation. They share their experience on the practical and sustainable use of technology in business, governments, and not for profit organizations. They provide insights to learn and improve their professional skills, and they exchange best practices to open new horizons. The goal of our CodamX series is to foster the spread of great ideas and inspire the next generation of great builders.

Dott, setup for scale

Global warming, air pollution and saturated transportation networks are forcing drastic changes in mobility within cities. Dott, a young startup based in Amsterdam and founded in 2018, is looking to make cities greener & much more enjoyable by offering shared micro-mobility services (bikes, e-scooters, and more) for everyone in European cities. Maxim Romain (co-founder) and Philip Plotnikov (head of engineering) will explain how they tackle this challenge, and more specifically how they setup software engineering to scale the business fast and efficiently.

A compiler optimization story

Before Carlo was working at a company that compiles compilers, he attended Codam's first ever Piscine! Before that, he was a postman and an university drop-out. Today, he is here to tell you what is under the hood of a compiler. He will look at the specific structure of clang. Next to that, he will talk about his daily job, managing expectations (his' and the boss's), hearing a lot of "no's" and keep growing professionally. He finishes of with looking at a technical problem he encountered on the job, how he untangled it after which he will brag about the solution 😉. We're proud to have him on stage a year after his Piscine!

Software development beyond coding

I was in the last year of university and I ended up in a Java internship. The internship was intense, 5 days a week from 8 to 12 hours a day. It was hard, but my efforts paid off. I will talk about the good and the bad, the lessons learned over almost 13 years of software development. Topics covered: approaching a new project/framework, interaction with teammates and clients and how to stay up-to-date in such a fast-evolving technological landscape. This session will deliver tips and tricks anyone can use straight away for becoming a software professional.

Artificial Creativity - Thinking Inside the Box

In the recent years we have seen breakthroughs in the possibilities of creative software. Game-playing agents developed by Deepmind are capable of learning surprisingly original solutions. Deep learning allows anyone to create paintings in the style of famous artists. Other computational tools are now used to inspire and guide human designers. In this talk, we will look at examples of computational creativity that use deep learning, consider if they qualify as being truly creative, and discuss what additional steps would be necessary for artificial creativity.

Geo visualisations for the web - going beyond Google Maps

Present-day, maps are no longer printed on paper, 2D and flat. Maps are dynamic, interactive and online. We no longer go to maps to find out where we are. Instead, the maps tell us where we are and they form around us on the fly. Web Cartography overlaps the worlds of GIS, Web Technology and Design. A modern cartographer has to be able to find, manipulate and store geo-spatial data, design the functional and cartographic representation of the map and implement this all through code! In this talk Niene will take you through the Web Map Universe, beyond Google Maps.

A good developer is skilled at writing code. A great one is skilled at writing code and so much more. Algorithms and data structures will simply get you the job but these skills alone — awesome as they are — will not prepare you for a successful career in engineering. So, how exactly do developers go from capable to good? From good to great? Hajar Mokhtafa will take you on a journey where she will share her own experience starting from a coding bootcamp herself, to now being a fully fledged Developer creating value for the top companies in The Netherlands.
