What we learned from Codam\u2019s International Women\u2019s Day panel<\/p>

What does it take to shape the future of technology?<\/p>

On International Women\u2019s Day, Codam hosted a panel with inspiring female leaders from across the tech industry. Together with Corinne Vigreux<\/b> (TomTom & Codam)<\/i>, Dr. Cara Antoine<\/b> (Capgemini)<\/i>, Christina Calj\u00e9<\/b> (TINTT),<\/i> Gwen Kolader<\/b> (CL Global)<\/i>, and Marion van Happen<\/b> (HeadFirst Group)<\/i>, we explored leadership, innovation, and the role women play in building the technology of tomorrow. <\/p>

The discussion made one thing clear:<\/p>

women don\u2019t just belong in tech \u2014 they are essential to building better technology.<\/b><\/p>

Here are some of the key insights from the evening.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Innovation needs different perspectives<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Innovation rarely happens when everyone in the room thinks the same way.<\/p>

Corinne Vigreux shared that the most creative solutions often emerge when people from different backgrounds approach a problem together. Gender diversity, cultural diversity, and different educational paths all bring new ways of thinking. <\/p>

If everyone looks at a problem through the same lens, the solutions tend to look the same too.<\/p>

That\u2019s why diverse teams are often more innovative. They challenge assumptions, question the obvious, and see opportunities others might miss. <\/p>

For technology companies \u2014 whose products affect millions of people \u2014 that diversity of thinking is not just valuable. It\u2019s essential. <\/p>

If you\u2019re not in the room, you\u2019re not shaping the future<\/p>

Dr. Cara Antoine highlighted why representation in tech matters more than ever.<\/p>

Many modern technologies, especially artificial intelligence, are built using historical data. But history itself isn\u2019t neutral. It can be incomplete, biased, or shaped by limited perspectives. <\/p>

When that data is used to train algorithms, those biases can easily carry over into the technology we build.<\/p>

If the teams creating these systems don\u2019t reflect the diversity of society, the results won\u2019t either.<\/p>

That\u2019s why representation is so important \u2014 not just as a diversity goal, but as a responsibility.<\/p>

As Dr. Antoine put it:
\u2018we need women in the rooms where the algorithms are written\u2019.<\/i><\/p>

One of the biggest misconceptions about the tech industry is that everyone started coding at age twelve.<\/p>

Christina Calj\u00e9 challenged that idea.<\/p>

She shared that she doesn\u2019t come from a computer science background herself, yet she has built multiple technology-focused companies. Her journey into tech started with curiosity and a desire to solve problems. <\/p>

Understanding the problem you want to solve can be just as powerful as understanding the technology itself.<\/p>

For people considering a career switch into tech, her message was simple:
\u2018You don\u2019t need to know everything at the start\u2019.<\/i><\/p>

Curiosity, resilience, and adaptability can take you much further than you might think.<\/p>

Claim your voice<\/p>

Another theme that resonated throughout the panel was confidence.<\/p>

Gwen Kolader spoke openly about moments earlier in her career when her ideas were overlooked or repeated by someone else in the room. It\u2019s an experience many professionals \u2014 especially those in underrepresented groups \u2014 can relate to. <\/p>

Over time, she learned how to reclaim her voice.<\/p>

Sometimes that means calmly pointing out that an idea originally came from you. Sometimes it means making sure you finish what you started saying. <\/p>

Confidence doesn\u2019t appear overnight. It grows through experience. <\/p>

But learning to own your ideas and contributions is an important step toward leadership.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Marion van Happen shared a story that many leaders will recognize.<\/p>

Early in her career, she believed she needed to behave like the men around her in leadership roles in order to succeed. But trying to fit into someone else\u2019s mold eventually became exhausting. <\/p>

Over time, she realised her strength came from something else entirely: curiosity.<\/p>

By asking questions, being honest about mistakes, and staying authentic, she became a stronger leader and built stronger teams.<\/p>

Authenticity turned out to be her greatest leadership asset.<\/p>

And that authenticity allowed her to make a bigger impact.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The next generation of women in tech<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Throughout the evening, the panel kept returning to one important idea: representation creates possibility.<\/p>

When young women see leaders who look like them in technology, it becomes easier to imagine themselves in those roles too.<\/p>

Events like this are not just about sharing experiences. They\u2019re about opening doors. <\/p>

For students at Codam \u2014 and anyone thinking about starting a career in tech \u2014 the panel offered a powerful reminder:<\/p>

\u2018You don\u2019t need to follow a traditional path.
You don\u2019t need to have everything figured out\u2019.<\/i><\/p>

If only a small group of people builds these systems, the technology will reflect that.<\/p>

But when more voices are included \u2014 more backgrounds, more experiences, more perspectives \u2014 the technology becomes stronger.<\/p>

And the future becomes better for everyone.<\/p>
